Guernsey Lit - Shaffer and Barrows

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
by Mary Ann Shaffer & Annie Barrows

This book tells a little known story about the occupation of the island of Guernsey by the Nazis during World War II.

It is told in the form of letters from Guernsey residents to author, Juliet Ashton, who is researching a book. Juliet eventually visits the island and meets her letter writers and is enchanted by the writers and their island.

The focus of the book is to highlight the point that there are many ways to survive bad times. For the people of Guernsey, during Nazi occupation, it was the power of books that nourished them.

The pace of the book is a leisurely one that allows you time to develop clear ideas about the characters. Even though the book is mostly light-hearted, the stories about life under Nazi occupation give substance to the story.

If you're looking for a compelling, heartwarming book to read on a crisp fall evening this one is a great choice!
